Boxford Town Library Technology Plan
2006-2011
Goals and Objectives
As part of the Library Long Range Plan 2005-2010 developed by
representatives of the community, the trustees and the library staff, the
following goal represents the continued interest in technology: “By 2010, the
residents of Boxford find leading edge technology incorporated into the programs
and services of the libraries”. The Technology Plan supports this goal in the
following manner:
Goal 1 Ensure stable and reliable Internet access for patrons at both
libraries.
Activities:
1.Re-deploy computers formerly used by staff as public kiosks to upgrade public
access to the internet. (August,
2005)
2.Develop schedule for library PC’s to be replaced at 3 year intervals (FY06)
3.Upgrade Internet connection for 2 public computers at West branch utilizing
free connections supported by Verizon. (FY06)
Goal 2 To provide the best possible customer service to its patrons, new
computers will be purchased for the staff to allow them to use current ILS
software.
Activities:
1.Purchase and install new PC’s for staff at the Main and West Branch libraries.
(August 2005)
Goal 3 Ensure that the staff can maintain/increase their knowledge of
technology by attending training sessions.
Activities:
1.Baseline staff knowledge of software, hardware, internet and various office
applications (FY06)
2.Encourage staff to attend training to maintain/increase their knowledge of
technology. (Ongoing)
3.Create email accounts for all staff members and train staff to use email
(November 2005)
4.Hold “technology” sessions at every other staff meeting to acquaint staff with
new data bases and applications (Ongoing)
Goal 4 Provide wireless Internet access for library patrons.
Activities:
1.Install wireless network in Cummings Room at Main library. (FY07)
2.Install wireless network in the West branch (FY08)
Goal 5 Provide patrons with training on online data bases available within
the library consortium and the World Wide Web.
Activities:
1.Secure grant funding to purchase 6 laptops equipped with wireless network
access. (FY2007)
2.Identify volunteers and staff to develop and deliver training (FY07).
3.Train volunteers and staff (FY07)
4.Deliver training to patrons. (FY07)
Goal 6 Provide new methods and/or formats for digital audio books.
Activities:
1.Investigate new methods of audio book delivery (such as Overdrive and OCLC
NetLibrary/Recorded Books) and decide on best solution for Boxford. (FY2006)
2.Deliver new formats to patrons. (FY2007)
Goal 7 Install replacement server to further develop, maintain and secure
information flow (internal budgeting documents, policies, procedures, staff
communication, etc.)
Activities:
1.Purchase and install replacement server (FY07)
Goal 8 – Install new phone system to replace aging phones and inadequate
wiring in the Main Library
Activities:
1.Acquire professional assessment of current system and recommended upgrades
(FY07)
2.Recommend for purchase and installation a new phone system (FY08)
Goal 9 – Replace public photocopiers at both libraries
Activities:
1.Determine age and quality of existing library photocopiers (FY07)
2.Investigate most cost effective and efficient manner, including cost to the
public, of providing self-service copying (FY07)
3.Replace copier at West Branch in FY08
4.Replace copier at Main Library in FY09
